Applying for online courses is an exciting time. In the excitement, you may overlook some important aspects that insure your distance education is legitimate. There are many schools and organizations, while perfectly acceptable to some, are not acceptable to others. There are a few things to check on before you apply for any course online.

Make sure that any school or organization you apply to is accredited. There is a variety of accrediting agencies floating around on the internet. Some schools claim to be accredited by agencies that focus solely on distance education. Others claim to be state certified or registered. Still, others claim to be accredited by some international accrediting agency accepted worldwide. These agencies sound professional and legitimate to unsuspecting students eager to begin online courses.

However, to reputable institutions and some employers, these agencies are not anything but a name. When applying, make sure the school is regionally accredited. If the school is foreign, double check that their accreditation standards would be recognized in the country you live in as legitimate and reputable.

Reevaluate whether to apply to any school that offers life experience degrees. No reputable school offers to give someone a degree for living life. Since everyone has different life experiences, how can they determine any sort of standards towards earning a life experience degree? They cannot. They just offer this degree for a lot of money to unsuspecting students who are excited at the prospect of earning a degree. Also, avoid any school that claims you can earn a degree with only five classes. Degrees take time and dedication to learn. Five classes is a semester, not a degree.

Watch out for schools that offer their own college scholarships. If an online school is offering a scholarship of five hundred dollars or less, they are using the scholarship to bait you. Most likely, they are a diploma mill operating as an online school. These are easy to spot because you will not have to actually apply for the scholarship or do any sort of interviewing to win it. They will award it to you for your grades, life experience or some other reason. Then you will be charged a hefty tuition price that they will make a big show about deducting the five hundred you earned. The world of college scholarships is competitive and legitimate schools do not just hand them out.

Double-check the faculty listings. If most of the faculty graduated from the school or a school that does not sound too familiar, think about applying elsewhere. If the school name is brand new, or the school recently changed locations, this is an orange flag to do some extra research before sending in any money or application. The easiest way to find out if a school is legit is to call a school you are interested in transferring the course credits to and ask if they accept credits from that school.

By double-checking all the facts and information you find about a school that offers online courses, you are more likely to avoid taking courses from a school not recognized in other schools or workplace.

The desire for distance education has caused an outpouring of new online schools all over the internet. Some of these schools are legitimate and go through the accreditation process. Other schools are merely fronts for diploma mills and lackluster education. Occasionally, employers and other schools view online only schools differently than online classes taken from reputable universities. So how do you know which school gives you the best edge in life? The following advice can help you market yourself and your degree to future employers and academic institutions.

Online only schools do not have a brick and mortar school where they operate. They might have a small office in a strip mall or business center. They may have very little staff even though they offer numerous courses and degrees. However, just because there is no fancy building to visit does not mean the school cannot provide you with a sound education. When researching online only schools, make sure that they are accredited by a regional accreditation agency. Check to see if they have won any recognized awards for online education.

Click on the ‘contact us’ button on their website and make sure there is an email address, phone numbers and business address. Avoid any online school with only a 1-800 number or email address. After you have done some research, apply and begin enrolling. There are online only schools that offer degrees in business, psychology and liberal arts.

So why do employers view online schools differently than regular schools? Distance education is being embraced by the academic world with open arms and a big smile. To those no longer furthering their education, distance education seems too easy to obtain and not like a real college degree. Big changes always take time to adjust to and become accepted. Therefore, when employers see resumes with online only schools listed as the diploma granting institution, they are unsure about the quality of education you received. The same may be true for certain academic institutions that consider online education inferior to classroom education.

When interviewing, make sure you mention if your degree does not contain any life experience credits. Life experience credits are not as valued by schools or employers because they cannot be validated. If your degree does contain life experience credits, be able to communicate effectively why the degree granting institution felt your life experience was worth college credits. Let them know about relevant projects you worked on, associations or clubs you started or supervised and any other aspect of your education that highlights your strengths.

Overall, you market yourself to a prospective school or employer with enthusiasm and confidence. Do not let anyone make you feel that an online degree is inferior to a traditionally earned degree. Even if you run into a few people unfamiliar with online education, use it as an opportunity to show them how well online degrees prepare students for the future. The key to marketing yourself is showing them how competent you are and how well prepared your college degree has made you.

Homeschooling takes on many forms. There are homeschoolers that use an eclectic style, those that unschool, those that use prepackaged curriculums and still others that rely on distance education to supplement hands-on instruction. Homeschooling has come a long way in the past couple of decades and new homeschoolers are bombarded with educational options. The newness of online classes and the learning curve many homeschooling parents have to go through in the beginning, can make online classes an overlooked resource. Online classes benefit homeschoolers in different ways based on how their homeschool is run.

When students get older, some subjects become too complicated for parents to teach. On the other hand, some students require help beyond what a parent can provide. This is where online classes can benefit both parents and students who home educate. Both schools and organizations provide opportunities to take classes online. Students can continue their traditional from of homeschooling but supplement with online classes for certain subjects. Some subjects that homeschoolers can consider for an online class are geometry, physics, algebra and government. Students can also enroll in online writing classes if they struggle with learning proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

One benefit of online classes for homeschoolers is that parents get a little backup when it comes to teaching their child. Most homeschoolers deal with uncertainty at some point, especially in the beginning. Having an outside resource can calm instructional fears parents may be feeling. Instructors vary in their methods and your child may click with an online class instructor in an area they have been struggling in at home. It also gives parents the option of discussing their child’s education with the online class instructor to assess strengths and weaknesses. Some online classes require a test before the student can enroll in the class. These tests, which are usually provided free of charge if the student is enrolling, is an easy way for parents to see if their home education program is on track and working well.

One of the biggest benefits of online classes for homeschoolers is that older students can self-direct their learning. This teaches responsibility and time management skills. It also frees up the parent to work with younger kids, run errands or spend time doing something around the house. With online classes, parents get a little bit more freedom from the rigors of homeschooling. Online classes also show colleges that the student can perform well not only in their home education subjects, but also in subjects provided by a school or organization. This may help the student when applying for college or college scholarships.

The prospect of earning transferable credits is another benefit of online classes for homeschoolers. Homeschoolers are required to maintain their own records and transcripts. With some online classes, the credit earned are put on an accredited transcript which makes them transferable if a student re-enter public school or goes to college.

Even though most homeschooling families prefer to be in charge of their home education program, some families enjoy the option of distance education for homeschooling.

Schools are excited to offer distance education classes to students. They can bring in a broader scope of students including those who would be unable to attend college without distance education. New programs are being developed and implemented each year. For some degree programs, the school has a short residency requirement. For most students, the opportunity to complete the majority of their education through distance learning outweighs the upset a residency requirement may cause.

Residency requirements vary by college, but most institutions try to arrange distance education options that are agreeable to your schedule. Some colleges offer weekend college and require a certain number of credits be completed through this option. Usually it is not a large amount of credits. Many times the amount is under ten credits but not over fifteen credits. So at most you would need to arrange to take five classes at the campus. This option is preferable to some students because it gives them the chance to experience the college lifestyle of attending campus classes and being in the college environment.

Other residency requirements require a one or two week stay during the summer or at the beginning of the distance education program. These residencies are required so students can meet the faculty, take introductory courses, meet other distance education students face-to-face and get a feel for the college. Many students actually enjoy these residencies because it increases their excitement for learning and allows them to meet students personally who will soon become screen names on a class discussion board. Most schools that offer these sorts of residencies make them mandatory. You cannot enroll in the distance education program without completing the residency requirement.

Another option some schools use is to require a one semester residency. These residencies are popular amongst schools that offer medical science degrees online. With a one semester residency, schools can evaluate your skills and abilities while at the same time offer you hands-on lab work. Semester residencies usually happen towards the end of your degree so you can utilize all you have learned during the past few years. These residencies tend to set you up on campus in a dorm with roommates. If the residency happens in your last semester, you can plan to stay a couple extra days for graduation.

When completing the residency requirement you need to bring enough money for lodging, food and fun. Most schools offer students the opportunity to stay on the campus for a cheaper fee than staying in a hotel. Some schools offer meal plans, but if it is the summer you may find you need to eat at restaurants or buy microwaveable dinners for your room. Since most schools are not local to the student, remember to bring extra money to see the sights if you are staying in a large city.

Overall, most distance education students enjoy the residency requirements of the online program because it enhances their college experience. For some students, being able to put faces to screen names and visit the brick and mortar building of their online program builds excitement and motivation.

There are critics of both online classes and campus classes for college education. There are also advantages and disadvantages to both learning choices. No matter which educational medium you choose, both options can give you a sound education. If you are deciding between taking online classes or sticking strictly to attending campus classes think about the following pros and cons when making your decision.

Attending campus classes means you are required to follow the schedule the school gives you. You have no choice on when to attend classes or work on assignments. You may have a few class time choices, but overall you will need to arrange your personal schedule around school. Early classes have you rising before the sun, and late classes interfere with personal time and takes time away from spouses and kids. Other times, the only class scheduled falls during a time you must work. This means you either skip taking the class or ask your employer for the time off. Skipping the class means you increase the amount of time you need to stay in school. On the other hand, employers are not too keen on giving employees time off for an extended period of time.

Online classes do not have a scheduled time so you can access them whenever you have free time at home. You do not need to take time off work or miss class because you are sick. Online classes give you the freedom to work at your own pace as long as assignments are turned in by the due date. There is no commute to and from the class unless you count walking from your couch to your computer.

Campus classes do offer social interaction that is lacking with online classes. You will get to hear other theories and opinions from fellow students on class topics. Your professor will be able to relay even more theories to you during lectures. Group projects help you practice group management skills and feed off others ideas. You also have a greater chance of making friends and possible important acquaintances. It is also easier to ask for references from professors who have met you first-hand and know who you are.

Online classes are isolated, with the only interaction being on discussion boards and email. You still hear ideas and theories, but they do not have the same impact as hearing them from the person. It is also harder to sense emotion on a typed discussion board. If students begin debating a topic, the chance of people getting upset or offended is increased because you cannot tell the emotion behind the words. You also have to consider computer problems when taking online classes. Internet connections are not always stable and if you happen to hit the submit button at the wrong time you may jeopardize your grade.

Make a pro-con list when deciding between online and campus classes. Mull over the advantages and disadvantages of each type. If you still struggle with the decision, try taking one online class to see how you like it.

Not everyone needs to earn a diploma or degree online. There are plenty of students who have no problem commuting to and from classes. However, even if it is possible to take classes on campus, it is not always convenient. If you are perfectly capable of traveling to your school for the majority of your classes, but still wish you had some extra personal time, then consider taking distance learning classes as you need them.

As colleges develop more distance learning classes, students are finding that classes not originally offered online are now part of the distance learning schedule. These classes can be anything from required elective credits to required education credits. The great thing about using distance learning on a class by class basis is that students who can only attend school part-time can increase their course load by adding a distance learning course. Students who thought a four-year degree would take six years are finding that distance learning class offerings are shortening their expected graduation date.

Class schedules usually come out a few weeks before registration opens. This is the time to map out your schedule, including any online classes. One thing to remember is that you are not the only one desiring the freedom distance learning brings. Many students are just as excited as you to enroll in an online course. Online classes tend to have a lower student allowance number, which means they fill up fast and have a waiting list. To avoid missing the distance learning class, register as soon as possible and watch for students who drop within the first few days. Many schools allow a drop-add period the first week of classes and this policy applies to distance learning classes too. If you miss the original enrollment, you may be able to get into the class during the drop-add period.

Do not be discouraged if you miss out on a distance learning class one semester. If the class was popular, it will be offered on a consistent basis. The hard part is trying to enroll in a class that is only offered every other semester or so because it is not in high demand. When taking online classes, remember to look at class offering that are not in your major. Some elective credits can be taken from class offering in other majors. For example, English major could check out the class offerings of the communications major and possibly find something they can use as an elective credit.

Take advantage of distance learning classes by saving them up for your last two semesters or so. This will make you less frazzled as your college career winds down. Take two or three classes on campus and the rest online. If you know that some of your classes need to be electives, you may be able to find electives online that are easy for you.

To get the most out of your college education, utilize distance learning on a class by class basis. This can help shorten the amount of time you attend college, free up personal time and provide you with a unique college experience.

Private tutors and well-known tutoring franchises involve paying hefty fees and scheduling times convenient for you and the tutor. Some of these services provide tutors with questionable educational backgrounds. With online learning getting such a good reputation amongst students, teachers and school administration, different companies have started offering online tutoring services for a fraction of the cost of a traditional tutor.

Elementary, high school and college students have the opportunity of receiving individualized help in the privacy of their own home via online tutoring. There are numerous online tutoring services available with a wide range of fees and subjects. Students can get help in science, math, english, writing and test prep. Online tutoring companies hire teachers and individuals with advanced education to tutor students through their program. The applicants to online tutoring companies are usually thoroughly screened to insure they have the education and experience necessary for successful tutoring. Many online tutors also receive extra training from the company that hires them. Some online tutoring programs boast tutoring services 24/7 so you can arrange for a session that meets your schedule.

Online tutoring works much like a regular tutor except the student does everything via their computer. Students will receive a screen name and password for signing on to their tutoring service. For some services, the student will prearrange a date and time to have their tutor available for them. Other services will list dates and times that tutors are available and for what subjects. Then students sign-up under the tutor they want. Online tutoring services use white boards, instant messaging and on occasion vocal sessions using microphones or headsets. Students will be able to work out math equations, fix writing errors or just ask simple questions during their session.

Like any online learning experience, there are things to watch out for when hiring an online tutor. Some online tutoring is free because the company does not use trained individuals. There may be a community message board, segmented by subject, which students post their questions on. Then anyone who registers with the site as a tutor can answer the question. There are no guarantees that this information is correct or valid.

The best way to test an online tutoring program is to accept any trial offers the company has on their website. Some sites offer one free tutoring session or a timed session for a reduced price. There are also certain libraries that offer free online tutoring for students. The only disadvantage to these is that they are only available when there is a librarian online to help. So online library tutors are not available early morning or late night hours.

Reasons to take advantage of online tutoring sessions are that you can access them anywhere you have a computer with Internet, you can receive homework help or tailor-made tutoring sessions at home, you can get help when you need it the most without waiting on a tutor and it is an affordable alternative to traditional tutoring. Students who take advantage of online tutoring services have extra edge in their academic career.

Homeschooling is growing in large numbers each year. With the growth of homeschooling came the debut of distance learning opportunities for homeschoolers. Schools and organizations realized that homeschoolers could benefit from distance learning programs and started developing classes aimed at homeschoolers. Now, the public school system has joined the cause with certain states promoting enrollment in state-funded virtual schools.

Educational publishers offer CD-ROM based distance learning. These courses utilize a CD-ROM and sometimes a textbook or workbook. The parent helps with any questions and the student sends in tests and papers via email or website to an accredited teacher. The distance learning program then helps the family to keep records and assessments.

Online academies and schools are another choice of distance learning for homeschoolers. Students enroll in these programs just like they would a regular school and then access the class through the internet. All courses are completed online and utilize discussion forums, email and white boards for class work. The advantage to online academies is that many of them are accredited and will send a high school diploma upon completion. They will also keep detailed transcripts that students can use when applying for college. Another benefit is that most online academies offer distance learning on a course-by-course basis. This way, families can utilize the school for subjects they struggle with teaching or for elective courses they have trouble finding materials on.

Online tutoring is another form of distance learning that homeschoolers can take advantage of. Online tutoring programs are propping up all over the internet. Many of them use certified teachers that they extensively train before letting them tutor. Students enroll in the online tutoring program, sign on for a session and get help with subjects they struggle with. Some parents struggle with certain academic subjects, so using the distance learning form of online tutors lets their kids get extra help from an outside source without having to disrupt the homeschool environment.

Colleges and universities are now offering distance learning courses for high schoolers. The school allows high schoolers to enroll in their online high school program and earn an accredited diploma. Many of these distance learning programs allow for the transfer of previously earned high school credits, including those earned through homeschooling. The development of distance learning programs for homeschooler greatly increases the opportunities available to students learning at home. It also allows older students to self-direct their learning and be more responsible for their education.

If a homeschooler wants to keep their child at home, but worries about developing a well-rounded curriculum, virtual schools could be the answer for them. Virtual schools are fairly new. They may or may not be state-funded and not every state has one.

These schools are web-based and students receive the same education as the public schooled children. This is a good option for homeschoolers who want to include religious education into their children’s curriculum without having to worry about developing the entire curriculum. Overall, advanced technology has made homeschooling easier and more obtainable for families who want to explore that educational option.

High school is a hectic time for many students. Life changes cause some students to have to put their high school education on hold to pursue other things. In the past, if you left high school there was a good chance you never went back for the coveted high school diploma. With the homeschooling movement growing, and adults wanting to complete high school, more and more families are looking at alternative means to obtaining a high school diploma. It is getting harder to succeed in life without a high school diploma, but with Internet popularity, it is much easier to earn a high school diploma online than in the past.

When researching high school diploma programs online remember that a high school diploma and GED are two separate things. The GED consists of subject tests you pass to earn a high school equivalency diploma. The GED can be completed faster than a traditional high school diploma online, but some students want a traditional high school diploma rather than an equivalency diploma. An actual high school diploma program sends an accredited diploma just like you get from a regular high school. Make sure that any program you enroll in is accredited by one of the six accreditation agencies supported by the Department of Education.

These high school diplomas are the most marketable and leave no concern over the legalities of presenting them to schools and workplaces. If an online high school diploma program is only accredited by a state agency or distance education service, it is not the same thing. Only enroll in these programs with the understanding that there are no guarantees your high school diploma will be marketable, and in some cases, even legal.

There are many online high schools accredited regionally that are open for enrollment all year long. Tuition usually includes access to certified teachers via email and phone, any books or materials needed, testing assessments and the diploma. Schools vary on how long their programs take to complete, but some schools offer a high school diploma in under a year.

Earning your high school diploma online is really dependent on how quickly you work through the materials. If an online high school does not require books then your classes will be strictly online. If finances are a concern, you could see if your state has a state-funded virtual school that offers a high school diploma.

Online programs for high school diplomas are easy to find with a simple internet search. If you desire to walk down the aisle and get your diploma, search for online programs that offer a graduation ceremony. These programs will require that you travel to the state they are located in, but some online high school graduates consider this their senior trip. It also gives you and your family time to bask in the glory of your success and for you to walk with other students who took the online program with you. Getting your high school diploma through distance education makes a high school education obtainable for those who needed to put it on hold the first time.

You graduate high school and look forward to continuing your education at a college or university. Your first sixty credits help you earn an associates degree. This degree can help you get a better job or transfer to a better university. If you need to work or raise a family, but still want to work towards an associates degree, enroll in an online associates degree program. With a little research, you can find associates degree programs that are easily transferable to other schools.

Community colleges are popular for students who want to get their associates degree before working or attending a large school. Community colleges are also cheaper than larger schools. Community colleges offer distance education for associate degrees and certificates. Certain career development schools also offer associates degrees and certificates online. Depending on your future goals, this option is becoming more popular for students who wish to obtain a degree.

Associate degree programs are available online from an abundant number of schools. Associate degrees do not usually require too much field experience, so they are easier to offer online than degrees that require more in depth field experience. You can get an associate of arts degree or an associate of science degree online. The AA gives you credits worthy of transferring and the AS gives you a degree worthy of taking into the workforce. Online programs for both degrees include: criminal justice, education, accounting, psychology, sociology, business, automotive technology, computer technology and more.

Once you have done a little research and decided on your major, contact the schools you are interested in to find out if they offer your degree online. You can also research schools online to find schools out of your general area that may offer your major. Just make sure that any school you choose is accredited by an agency recognized by the Department of Education. You will have trouble transferring college credit from any online associates degree from an unaccredited school. Once you find a school, the application process is the same as if you were registering at the regular school. You will need to send in test scores and high school transcripts.

Once you are registered, begin enrolling in classes. Most classes will still require that you buy the same textbook that campus classes are using. Your professor will most likely assign reading sections from the textbook along with any work assignments. The great thing is that the due date will not be two days away. Online classes offer much more scheduling freedom than on campus classes.

If you are taking distance education classes at a local community college, you might consider taking a few night classes on campus along with your distance education classes. Once you have completed sixty or more credits, your school will grant you the associates degree. Most schools will allow online degree graduates to get their diploma with the other graduates at the graduation ceremony. If you work diligently, you can earn an online associates degree in two years or less.
