Many adult graduates enjoy having parties celebrating their achievements. However, because they are adults with households and employment already established, they are not interested in receiving gifts when people come to their parties. One way to indicate this preference is to note on their graduation announcements and party initiation that this is an event with “no gifts” expected.

Some party goers will not understand this practice, because they come from a place where they are expecting to honor the new graduate with some present or some thing. However, the adult graduate should mark this preference on the graduation announcement. Most graduation announcements are pre made by the school, and do not designate an option when ordering for a personal announcement or statement. However, it is expected that within a graduation announcement mailing, there will be an insert in the envelope. Along with the official branded graduation announcement from the school, the graduate can put in a flyer advertising their party or open house. On this flyer they can include the date, time, location and plans for the gala. On this insert, they should include the statement that no graduation gifts are expected.

The more computer literate graduates can invite people to their party via the internet. Online party and event planning services, such as Evite.com, can help the graduate organize a gust list and sent out announcements. In addition, they can also track RSVPs or regrets only responses. On these online announcements and these online invitations, the graduate can include the text “no gifts expected” in order to inform the attendees of this custom. A link back to the event website can expand upon why they gradate does not want to receive any gifts for their achievement. Perhaps they already have too much stuff. Or they can even direct those who want to give to donate to a charity of their choice. In any case, it is a polite way to redirect those who want to add to the clutter in the graduate’s home. A no gift policy is an excellent transition, and one that should be noted in a mailed or emailed announcement.

Inevitably, a well meaning family member or friend will show up at the graduation event with a gift in hand. At this point, it is easier to thank them for their appreciation without mentioning your no gift policy for graduation. Then, hand off the gift to the party planner, your sibling or a close friend, and open it later. No need to embarrass the giver in front of everyone present. That way, you can enjoy your gala in the midst of family and friends, and open your “no gift policy” present once everyone has departed for the night.
