Sending a thank you letter after receiving a graduation gift has become a lost art in out times. It used to be that every gesture and every present caused a thoughtful response from the recipient. Receiving a hand written letter in the postal mail was a common occurrence. However, in our fast paced world and in the world of instant electronic communication, this art is on the decline. Today, the art of writing a thank you note needs to be recovered.
Graduation gifts provide the perfect opportunity for the student to practice writing a thank you note in appreciation. A thank you note does not have to be fancy or complicated. First, choose your paper or your card. A blank card with a lovely image or picture on the front will do. In addition, you can purchase thank you notes created just for this purpose at most mass and specialty retailers. The front of these cards features a thoughtful phrase and an image or photograph. The inside is either blank or it has a short statement expressing gratitude.
The graduate can add a short note of a sentence or two inside the card or on the notepaper. They don’t have to be overly elaborate. A few words expressing thanks for the thoughtful gesture, combined with a description of what the graduate is going to do with the gift, will suffice. The point of the thank you note for a graduation gift is to express gratitude. Someone went out of their way to think of you, so you should respond with a thank you note. An honest and heartfelt statement of thanks, signed with an endearing signature, will be enough. Finally, seal up your note in an envelope and hand write the address on the front. A hand written address shows that you cared enough to take the time to mail someone a letter. Don’t worry if your handwriting is bad! The thank you letter more than makes up for your poor penmanship.
Finally, keep in mind that many graduation gifts come in the form of cash, checks or gift certificates. It is especially callous to not say thank you in a letter for such a versatile gift. Sending a thank you letter in response to a graduation gift such as these shows that you have manners and are thoughtful enough to think of others.
