The abbreviation JD is for the term Juris Doctor and this is the Latin term referred for the Doctor of Law. This is a degree in law offered by the worldwide universities, but is also noted in the United States universities. When any student adheres to the curriculum of obtaining a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, then she or he is planning to acquire the required training to pursue a professional law career. The JD degree is considered as the first professional degree as the main aim of this degree is to train the future lawyers. The other names that are given for this degree in lieu are the Doctor of Jurisprudence or the Doctor of Law. Though, they are referred in various names, they are equal in validity.
The degree, bachelor of law is not accepted as the standard degree in law. However, a J.D. unlike a doctorate is not viewed as a terminal degree. A student can pursue his studies by acquiring a master of law degree, once he obtains a J.D. He can also opt for a doctorate of juridical science. None of these posts demand practicing law. Several universities worldwide have replaced the bachelor of law program to a Juris Doctor program. Recently, law schools in Hong Kong, Canada, Japan and Australia now offer the J.D.
The J.D. is presently considered to be the basic law degree. The syllabus is varied and is more general than the Doctorate of Juridical science and master of law degree. A J.D. awarded student is considered to be a well rounded, earned graduate who has basic education in law and is eligible to sit for the bar. The aim of J.D. program is to develop practical, professional and critical thinking skills, conduct research on regulatory and statutory laws, perform legal analyses and strategies, client representation and dealing with ethical and moral issues relating to legal practice.
The JD degree applicants with bachelors degree from any of the accredited institution is considered for JD law degree course. Students in the J.D. program should complete 22 to 24 units coursework in every four years. Juris Doctorate students are allowed to meet regularly with other classmates in study groups such that they can share their experiences and support each other in studies. JD degree programs facilitate the students with a wide range of skills including analyzing legal problems of the client, developing legal strategy, understanding and upholding their legal responsibilities.
